Homeschool vs Public School: What Tennessee Parents Should Know

Homeschool vs public school comparison for Tennessee parents in Gallatin TN

The homeschool vs public school question usually shows up at a turning point: a rough year, a move, a child who’s bored or overwhelmed, or a schedule that just doesn’t work anymore. It’s a big decision, and the internet is full of people who are very sure one side is always right. We don’t think it is.

We run a K-12 homeschool academy and an after school program for public school kids here in Gallatin, TN. We see families thrive on both paths. This guide lays out the real trade-offs so you can decide what fits your child right now, not forever.

Homeschool vs Public School: The Short Version

Public school gives your child a free, full-day education with licensed teachers, transportation, built-in classmates, sports and clubs, and services for many learning needs, all run by the district. Homeschool gives your family control over what, when and how your child learns, at the cost of more of your time, money and responsibility.

Homeschooling is still the less common choice. Federal survey data reported by Pew Research Center put it at about 3.4% of U.S. K-12 students in the 2022-23 school year. That means most families you know are in a traditional school, and that’s worth remembering if you’re feeling pressure either way.

Where Public School Shines

If those things matter most for your family, public school may be the right call, and that’s a perfectly good answer.

The Honest Trade-Offs

Your Time and Your Paperwork

Homeschooling in Tennessee comes with real requirements, including which legal path you use, instruction time, records and testing in certain grades. Our guide to Tennessee homeschool laws covers the details, and our step-by-step post on how to start homeschooling in Tennessee walks through the order of operations. This is general information, not legal advice. Confirm current rules with the Tennessee Department of Education.

Socialization

This is the worry we hear most. Homeschooled kids can have rich social lives, but it rarely happens by accident. It takes planned time with peers, which we cover in homeschool socialization: myth and reality.

Sports and Activities

Homeschooling doesn’t automatically rule out school sports. Tennessee’s high school athletic association has eligibility rules for homeschool students, with conditions, and districts can add their own. Check with your zoned school before you count on it. PE is a separate question, and our post on homeschool PE classes covers it.

Going Back

Choosing homeschool now doesn’t lock you in. Tennessee rules say a public school can’t refuse a student because they were homeschooled, though the district may test for grade placement and credits. Good records make that move much easier.

Questions to Ask Before You Decide

  1. What’s actually not working right now? A bad fit with one teacher is different from a bad fit with the whole model.
  2. Who will do the teaching each day? You, an online program, or teachers in the room?
  3. How will your child see friends every week?
  4. What does your work schedule allow?
  5. What’s your budget, including your own time?
  6. Is this a one-year decision or a long-term plan? Either is fine. Just be clear about which.
