The school day and the workday rarely line up. The bell rings early in the morning, dismissal comes mid-afternoon, and most jobs run well past both. Before and after school care is how working families fill those gaps, but “full-day coverage” is really three separate problems: the morning, the afternoon, and the days school is closed altogether. Each one has different options, and few programs solve all three.
We run an after school program in Gallatin, TN, so we will be upfront about where we fit. GMA covers afternoons and school break days. We do not run morning care on school days. This guide walks through all three gaps so you can build a plan that actually covers your week.
What Before and After School Care Covers
Picture a typical working parent’s day next to a typical school day and the gaps show up fast:
- The morning gap. You need to leave for work before school opens its doors. For many families this is 30 to 60 minutes.
- The afternoon gap. School lets out around 3:00. Work ends at 5:00 or later, plus the drive. This is usually the biggest gap, often two to three hours every day.
- The closure-day gap. Fall Break, Thanksgiving week, Christmas break, spring break, and scattered teacher days. In Sumner County this school year, that includes Fall Break October 5–9, Thanksgiving week November 23–27, and Christmas break December 21 through January 1, per the district calendar.
Some families need all three covered. Others have a spouse, grandparent, or flexible schedule that handles one piece. The first step is figuring out which gaps are actually yours.
The Morning Gap: Before School Care Options
Morning coverage is usually the shortest window, and the options tend to be tied to your child’s school:
- School-based Extended Day. Sumner County Schools runs Extended Day childcare, with before and after school care at participating elementary schools. Contact your school’s program director to confirm what is offered.
- YMCA programs. The YMCA of Middle Tennessee runs before and after school programs at participating schools.
- Family and carpools. A neighbor who drops off on the way to work, a grandparent who handles mornings, or a carpool rotation covers a lot of families.
- A shifted work start. If your employer allows it, starting 30 minutes later can close the morning gap without any paid care at all.
One thing worth knowing: a school’s morning program and an outside afternoon program work together fine. Plenty of families use on-site care for the morning and a pickup program for the afternoon.
The Afternoon Gap: Where GMA Comes In
The afternoon is where most families need the most help, and it is the part of the day our after school program is built for. Here is how it works, straight from our published schedule:
- School pickup right after dismissal, starting around 2:30 PM, from more than a dozen elementary and middle schools across Gallatin and Sumner County
- Snacks and check-in, then a staffed homework block every afternoon
- Physical education included free through Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, part of the GMA family that includes Global Martial Arts USA
- Standard pickup at 5:30 PM, with extended hours until 6:00 PM for later work schedules
Pricing is posted on our school pricing page: a one-time $75 registration fee, $110 per week for standard care, or $135 per week with extended hours. Pickup, snacks, homework help, and physical education are all included. For a closer look at the afternoon itself, read a day in the life at GMA.
Days When School Is Closed
This is the gap that catches families off guard. School-based programs may or may not stay open on break days, depending on the school, so ask early. At GMA, we run full-day break camps when schools close, with drop-off starting at 7:30 AM and extended care until 6:00 PM available for $40 per camp week. This school year that includes our Fall Break camp, October 5–9, 2026. Dates for future breaks are posted on our camps page as they are set.
For after school families, there is one more detail that matters: during summer break and school closures, you can hold your child’s spot with an off-week maintenance rate of $40 per week. Our post on off-school day camps covers how families plan around those single closure days.
Building Your Family’s Full-Day Plan
A plan that holds up all year usually comes together in five steps:
- Write down the real hours. Your child’s school start and dismissal times next to your work start and end times, including the drive. That shows you exactly how big each gap is.
- Solve the morning. Check whether your school offers morning Extended Day, then compare it with family or carpool options.
- Choose the afternoon program. Compare hours, pickup, homework time, and the true weekly cost. Our guide on how to choose an after school program has a full checklist, and this cost breakdown helps with the math.
- Plan the closure days now. Pull up the district calendar and mark every break. Decide which ones need camp coverage before they sneak up on you.
- Have a backup. Sick days, snow days, and late meetings happen. Know who your second call is.
