Why Families Stay: Inside the GMA After School Program Community

Families who stay year after year in the GMA after school program community in Gallatin TN

Enrolling a family is the easy part. Keeping one for four years is the real test — and it's the question we'd be asking if we were the parent standing in the lobby on a tour. The honest answer at GMA has less to do with our daily schedule than with our after school program community: the same faces every afternoon, the family events actually on the calendar, and the parents here in Gallatin, TN who end up knowing each other's kids by name. Here's what that community really consists of, why it keeps families here year after year, and where it has limits.

What an After School Program Community Actually Looks Like

"Community" gets used by every program with a bulletin board and a group photo. At GMA it means something you can put on a calendar. Beyond the daily after-school hours, we run four standing community programs built to pull parents in, not just take kids off their hands:

None of that appears in a tuition comparison chart. All of it is why the fifth year at a program feels different from the first. The full lineup lives on our about page, alongside the team and campus.

The Same Trusted Team, Year After Year

The single biggest reason families stay is unglamorous: staff turnover, or the absence of it. In a lot of after-school care, the adult who greets your child in September is gone by February, and your kid starts the relationship over. GMA is staffed by 16+ certified team members — every one background-checked, CPR and First Aid certified — and the academy has been run by the Spillmann family in Middle Tennessee since 1993. That's 33+ years of the same standards, now spanning three generations.

Continuity compounds. A child who starts here at six and stays through middle school isn't rebuilding trust every fall. The mentor who sat with them through third-grade multiplication is still on the floor when they test for their next belt. If you want to know exactly who those adults are and what they're certified in, we introduced the full team behind the program in detail.

Kids Stay Because There's Always a Next Thing

Parents stay for trust. Kids stay because something is waiting for them.

Martial arts is included free with after school enrollment, and it's structured as a multi-year progression rather than a weekly activity. A belt isn't handed out for showing up — it's earned over months, and the next one is always visible on the horizon. That's a very different engine than "we have a gym and a bin of board games." We broke down how the belt system actually works and what each rank asks of a child.

Add the rest of the afternoon — homework support, leadership and life-skills training, Fun Fridays with themed activities, arts and crafts — and there's a reason kids ask to go instead of negotiating their way out of it. The wider martial arts side of the GMA family, for the students who catch the bug, lives at Global Martial Arts USA.

What Parents Actually Say About Staying

We don't invent testimonials, so here is what's already published on our own site, in parents' own words.

"We tried three after-school programs before GMA. This is the only place where my son actually wants to go. The structure and discipline have transformed his behavior at home too." — Michelle L., parent of a 9-year-old
"The staff genuinely cares about every child. My daughter's grades improved within the first month and she talks about her instructors like they're family. Best decision we made." — David W., parent of a 10-year-old
"The programming here is incredible — academics, fitness, crafts, and life skills all under one roof. My son has grown so much since enrolling. He comes home excited every day." — Jennifer M., parent of an 8-year-old

Notice what none of them lead with: a facility feature or a price. They lead with people. The complete set is in our roundup of what parents are saying, and what that arc looks like for one child over time is in our student transformation piece.

The Honest Part: Community Isn't Automatic

Two things we'd rather say out loud than have you discover after you've signed.

First, we're not going to quote you a retention percentage. Plenty of programs do. We don't have an independently audited number, so publishing one would be marketing dressed up as information. What we can point to is 33+ years operating in Sumner County, being voted Best in Sumner County in 2024 and 2025, and a review wall we didn't have to write ourselves.

Second, community requires participation. The families who feel most at home here are the ones who come to Parent Night Out, show up for Family Club, and introduce themselves at the 5:30 pickup. If you enroll and treat GMA purely as afternoon coverage, you'll get exactly that — safe, structured, well-staffed afternoon coverage. You just won't get the part that makes people stay for five years.

And GMA isn't the right fit for every child, which a good program should tell you during the tour rather than after the deposit. Our after school program, our team, and our 6,000 sq ft campus are all open to look at before you commit. A free assessment and a walkthrough in Gallatin, TN cost you nothing but an afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Two things: staff continuity and events built for parents, not just kids. GMA has been run by the Spillmann family in Middle Tennessee since 1993 with a team of 16+ certified, background-checked staff, so children see the same trusted faces year after year. On top of the daily program we run Parent Night Out, Family Club, Ma'ams Club, and Guys Club — standing community programs that connect families to each other, not only to the school.

Both. Parent Night Out is a monthly supervised evening for kids so parents get a night out. Family Club brings parents and children together for shared activities and team building. Ma'ams Club and Guys Club are built specifically for moms and dads — workshops, social events, and mentorship. The families who feel most at home at GMA are the ones who show up to these.

We don't publish a retention percentage, because we don't have an independently audited number and we'd rather not market one. What we can point to is 33+ years operating in Sumner County, being voted Best in Sumner County in 2024 and 2025, and families whose children move through multiple belt ranks and several grade levels with the same team.

Yes, and you should. Book a free consultation and tour our 6,000 sq ft campus at 509 Garnet Ct Ste 300 in Gallatin, TN. Come during program hours, watch how staff talk to students, and ask about the next Family Club or Parent Night Out date. A tour tells you more about whether a community fits your family than any webpage will.
